Pears

When I was little, pears were yellow. There was no other way for them to be. A few years ago I was trying to teach little people colors and asked what color a pear was and they all answered in unison "green". Shocked, I corrected them and then watched their puzzled little faces in misunderstanding.

I know we have brown and red pears and the varieties have way developed since I was a little girl. Yes, and some green ones, that are more suitable for early picking and storage, but isn't yellow still the color of a pear, even though I never see them in stores?

Funny I should read this post tonight MG, just an hour or so after watching a TV program on pear cider, called "Perry"; I'd never heard of it before, but apparently there is an Australian company that is making this cider in the authentic, cold-pressed fashion, making it far less acidic and tart than the more popular apple cider. It is very popular in Scandinavia and France. Anyway, the pears they used were very definitely a yellow colour (although they did use some brown'ish varieties as well) But, there was not a green pear in sight :)

I would of said yellow...knew a dog once that would run a mile just to sniff one out and eat it...

I think its because you cant buy ripe pears in the stores.. unless its a road side stall...all they have is green hard ones...I never buy them..

I was thinking a yellowish-green... does that satisfy both sides?
I have to say, pears are one fruit I never have liked... I think it's a texture thing, the grittyness of them.

I'm with you Pita, I don't like them much either. The best i can usally do is a Nashi - now that puts me in heaven.

I heard about Perry too TM - but that was an internet trawl this weekend ... hmmm is there something in that??? lol

Would think that what is on the market now as pears is the result of variety breeding to ensure marketability with lower loss - the yellow pears that you remember had a high throw out rate at the greengrocers from bruising and being overripe - do remember them from my younger years as being something that was very nice, but a rare (luxury ?) thing - Fond of China pears (stewed) used to be my birthday desert - we had a few trees and they ripened just in time
