This was going to be a question for Abbey that I was including as a comment in the Sunshine post but I have decided to open it up - is it better (or more important) to love or be loved?
Okay I know some philosopher has probably answered that in great detail but I am interested in regular opinions...

Egads woman! Where DO you come up with these deep questions???
That's a tough one, and I'm not so sure there's a correct answer.
Whether we admit it or not (especially the self-proclaimed "Loners"), we want to know that somebody out there loves us and cares what happens to us.
But also, I think the heart is seriously missing out on something big and wonderful if it never has the opportunity to love another, whether the object of our affection is another human or a pet.
Sorry, I only have gray answers, no black/white.
My mind goes to strange places on the best of days - and yesterday was a particularly weird day for thinking lol.
And I have meditated over this all night but can't come up with a satisfactory resolution...
For me it is more important to love. If I cannot / do not love myself, how can I accept love from others? I don't think it's up to other people to show me how to be loved, it is up to me to show others how to love me.
I'm sure that can be said far more eloquently, and I'm not sure that I'm even making sense, but I know what I mean! lol!
Great question.
My fathers words...'In this world we either love or are loved'... ensure you are loved...
Pretty screwed up advice from a man who is a cold mullet... but it certainly messed me up for 20yrs...
I like to love and give, but I also like to be loved...It is possible to have both..
Ideally you would have both Abz but I do like Alison's answer about loving yourself being the starting point (my paraphrase of course). And Pita is also right - there is only gray in this situation - and every individuals and their relationships would be different.
Maybe I need to think about this (and me) a bit more ... or maybe just accept that the answer that I want just doesn't exist.
