25 Years On

It is the 25th Anniversary of the Gordon-below-Franklin Dam controversy in Tasmania.

So important for the region, Australia's political landscape and the green movement.

The photo is one that was credited with opening the eyes of the mainland as to what "the radicals" who were tying themselves to trees and machinery, were fighting for, which resulted in a swaying public opinion to away from condemning the "dole-bludgers" to saving this pristine wilderness.

A time to celebrate for all involved :-)

Now if we could just get the same result for that darn papermill ....

My Dad was there but it was part of his occupation ;) It's a very beautiful photograph!

I was listening to a another guy who was there for work too - he was one of the dozer drivers - about his reaction to the protesters at the time.

What was most interesting was that he is now forever grateful that the Dam wasn't built - with the huge influx of tourists in the intervening years his business (the dozers) has flourished more than he ever thought it was possible through the need for site works for hotels, restaurants, houses and the like to support the visitors.

I still have the photos of Josefs dad on his tripod at the Franklin... I didnt understand his passion at the time, but I admired him for his convictions...
