It was with great sadness that I heard on the BBC overnight that Miriam Makeba - Mama Africa herself - had passed away after performing a concert in Italy. She was just 76 - which for a woman of her strength, giftings, compassion, integrity and power nowhere near enough years in this world.
Long will she be remembered for her contribution to the anti-apartheid movement and for sharing her love of her homeland, even though she had to spend over 30 years in exile, with the rest of us.
South African radio is being flooded with calls of people wanting to share their memories, to pass on their condolences, to acknowledge this incredible human being. Tributes from the "important" people of the world, like Nelson Mandela, are also coming in with increasing alacrity.
May she rest in peace, the world is richer for knowing her but so much poorer for her passing.
