Aside from being a bit of a politics junkie (give me a country having an election and I am in seventh heaven), the results of the American election crucially affect the rest of the world.
For better or for worse, there is a strong argument that the President of America is the President of the World.
I say that on the basis of the economic and foreign affairs influence that the US has over the rest of the planet. Take the "credit crunch" and the war in Iraq as two classic (and current) examples.
In practical terms, the US President directly affects my life as much as the Australian Prime Minister. As such, I can't help but be interested.
